Under the chairmanship of Anwar Ahmad Ansari – Abdur Razzaque Ansari’s youngest son – the Chotanagpur Handloom now aims to combine the grit and persistence of Jharkhand’s craftspeople with modern technological know-how to help every weaver get fair remuneration for their hard work. The Chotanagpur Handloom is now a collective comprising over 72 weaver societies and about 10,000 artisans. Currently, efforts are underway to revitalise these co-operatives by training weavers in design skills, purchasing new equipment, and introducing new marketing methods.
The Chotanagpur Handloom & Khadi Weavers Co-operative Union Ltd.continues the mission of Abdur Razzaque Ansari by supporting artisans for their betterment. We work to arrange the raw materials necessary for weavers to continue working, and help market their goods across the country. In order to create holistic change, the Handloom also helps provide better equipment and training to its members, both through independent initiatives and schemes mandates by the Indian government.

Our mission statement The late Abdur Razzaque Ansari once dreamed of bringing the neglected weaver communities of Jharkhand back into the fold of mainstream society. The weavers of Jharkhand were acclaimed masters of their craft even before India achieved Independence, albeit disorganised and lacking infrastructure. Abdur Razzaque Ansari sought to challenge the odds by rallying these communities, providing them with the education and training necessary to operate at a larger scale. Abdur Ansari himself went from village to village, convincing weavers of the need for cooperation. The Chotanagpur Handloom is a testament to the belief the people can support themselves to create a better world for their children.

About The Founder
The apex body that Ansari helped build – the Chotanagpur Handloom & Khadi Weavers Co- operative Union Ltd. – still stands today as a testament to the dedication and sheer will of Abdur Razzaque Ansari.
